Prof. Tim Kwang-Ting Cheng (鄭光廷) is Vice-President for Research and Development and Chair Professor jointly appointed by the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering and the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He joined HKUST in 2016 as Dean of Engineering and has served as Vice-President for Research and Development since April 2022. He is also Director of the HKUST-WeBank Joint Laboratory.
He received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences from the University of California, Berkeley in 1988. Before joining HKUST, he was a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he held several academic leadership roles. Earlier, he spent five years at AT&T Bell Laboratories.
His research spans electronic design automation, electronics testing and design verification, computer vision, medical image analysis, mobile computing, and VLSI. He is a Fellow of the IEEE and the Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Sciences.
